Interview with: Savannah Bee Company

Sarah Velasco: Can you tell us about Savannah Bee Company? How did that begin?
Savannah Bee Company: Ted fell in love when honey then bees at the age of 12. An old man named Roy Hightower asked to keep bees on the Dennard’s property to make Tupelo honey, the queen of the honey world. The Dennard family agreed and Roy taught young Ted everything he knew about beekeeping. Ted’s passion grew into the business it is today.

Sarah Velasco: What is your mission?
Savannah Bee Company: To educate people on the benefits of honey inside and out as well as the importance of the honeybee to our environment, agriculture, and ecosystem.

Sarah Velasco: What types of products do you carry?
Savannah Bee Company: We have a line of Artisanal monofloral honeys along with a line of Naturally Luxurious, beehive inspired Body care.

Sarah Velasco: Are there common misconceptions about honey?
Savannah Bee Company: “Sugar is Sugar” Many people do not know how healthy honey is for you. Honey contains: all of the vitamins and nutrients your body needs except for vitamin d (hence the Land of Milk and Honey), important amino acids, and lipid enzymes which promote digestion among other things. Honey creates its own hydrogen peroxide so it never goes bad, but you can also use it to heal cuts and scrapes or to wash your face!

Sarah Velasco: What types of ingredients do you use in your Body Care products?
Savannah Bee Company: Our Body care is made with ingredients from the beehive: Honey, Beeswax, Propolis, and Royal Jelly. We use No Parabens, No Petroleum derived ingredients, and No Animal Testing.

Sarah Velasco: Why is it important to use natural and organic ingredients?
Savannah Bee Company: It is important to protect your body from harmful ingredients that will negatively affect your health.

Sarah Velasco: For readers that have never tried your products, what four products would you recommend to them?

Savannah Bee Company:

This top-selling luxuriant butter renews your skin while leaving it soft and supple. Royal Jelly, the most precious product from the hive, is combined with Honey, Beeswax and Propolis along with pecan oil, cocoa butter, Shea butter, orange peel wax all work together to nourish, repair and moisturize. You’ll receive the royal treatment with the rich nutrients and delicate blackberry fragrance.

Royal jelly is a “Cinderella” substance that turns a worker bee in to a queen. Royal jelly also allows her to live 40 times longer than the average bee as a result! Replete with a multitude of vitamins, proteins, lipids and sugars, this amazing natural substance is known for its nourishing and deep moisturizing properties- as well as its ability to promote skins elasticity and helps regenerate cell and tissue.

This Honey Wash gently exfoliates while cleansing the skin. It uses Honey and Propolis to create healthier skin and Royal Jelly to enhance the moisturizing effect. It comes in three beautiful fragrances: invigorating Lemongrass Spearmint, lightly fruity Wild Blackberry, sweet Southern Tupelo Honey and citrus sweet Orange Blossom. Follow the Honey Wash with our lightweight Honey Lotion or Royal Jelly Body Butter.

Bee Kissed with our Beeswax Lip Glosses. Cover your lips with a burst of flavor and shine while benefiting from the secrets from the hive like protecting beeswax, healthy Propolis and nourishing oils. Restore and enhance your natural beauty with three beautiful colors: sheer Sweet Nothings, striking Wild Blackberry, rosy Mint Blossom and golden Tupelo Honey.

This intense hand treatment with Propolis and Royal Jelly replenishes repairs and restores your skin. It adds softening peach oil and anti-oxidizing blueberry extract for another layer of healing. The Beeswax Hand Cream provides a long lasting shield from harsh elements. We recommend daily use, especially in the morning. It comes in a glass jar for desk or bedside and a convenient tube is easy to carry with you.

Sarah Velasco: Why is honey good in skin care?
Savannah Bee Company: Transcending all ages, honey remains the “Golden Elixir” of skin care. Rich in lore and myth about its radiant beauty enhancing properties, science has started to catch up. Honey is truly healing and helps our skin regenerate healthy cells. There is a reason why so many top spas include honey in their most luxuriant rituals. Honey is a gentle but highly effective cleanser, exfoliator, moisturizer and intense healing agent. It actually has hydrogen peroxide properties that clean your skin. It is a natural humectant pulling moisture from the air and feeding the skin.

Sarah Velasco: Where can readers find your products?
Savannah Bee Company: We have three stores in Savannah, one in Charleston. You can find our entire line in the southeastern Whole Foods. Check the Store Locator online for Savannah Bee products sold in your area: http://www.savannahbee.com/content/store-locator.

Sarah Velasco: Anything else we should know?
Savannah Bee Company: Recently Ted started a Not-for-Profit call The Bee Cause Project to raise a generation who admire and respect the noble honeybee. His goal is to put 1,000 glass observation beehives in 1,000 schools and the kids’ responses have been outstanding. For more information or to make a donation, buzz on by http://www.thebeecause.org/.
